Tip 108: BCG

The BCG vaccine is a live attenuated strain derived from Mycobacterium Bovis.
The neonatal UK vaccination programme is now risk based and targets those likely to be exposed. Studies of the vaccine have given widely varying results between countries and studies, varying from no protection to 70-80% protection in UK school children.
Meta-analyses have shown the vaccine to to be 70-80% effective in preventing the most severe form of TB in children such as TB meningitis.
