Tip 137: chronic lung disease 2

The aetiology of CLD is multifactorial, involving both antenatal and postnatal factors, including:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Chorioamnionitis
  • Fetal growth restriction <28/40
  • Prematurity, especially 23-32/40
  • Volutrauma and barotrauma from mechanical ventilation
  • Oxygen toxicity causing cellular damage
  • Late surfactant deficiency
  • Postnatal sepsis, especially candidaemia
