Tip 39: persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN)

The main principles for managing persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) are:

1) Treat & prevent hypoxia – aim pO2 ≥10 kPa and/or sats ≥95% (preductal)

2) Treat acidosis – aim pH ≥7.35

3) Treat & prevent hypotension – aim BP > average mean

4) Treat hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesia, hypophosphataemia

5) Treat & prevent distress – good analgesia/sedation +/- paralysis

6) Prevent hypothermia
