Tip 122: plastic bag use at delivery

Placing the preterm or low birth-weight infant inside a plastic bag under a radiant heater at delivery, reduces the chance of hypothermia, without causing significant hyperthermia.

This extends to infants <36 weeks gestation or <2500g (temp 36.5 – 37.5° 1 hour after delivery: RR [95% CI] of 1.81 [1.16-2.81]; p = 0.007).
